The History of The Church of God

The history of The Church of God dates back to 28 A.D. It was the same time when Jesus Christ called His twelve apostles on Mt. Kurn Hattin (now known as Israel) near Jerusalem. The Church of God was under the theocracy rule and was governed by God’s direction. The Church of God’s influence expanded until the whole world came to know of its existence.

During the time of Emperor Constantine, on June 14, 325 A.D., The Church of God renounced theocracy and instituted Episcopalian form of government. At this point the church stopped functioning although the organization continued.

Between 325 A.D. and 1903, God revealed the truth to people. Some of the men He used were: Martin Luther who was given divine understanding of justification by faith; John Wesley who started teaching about sanctification and holiness; Dr. Albert Simpson who taught about divine healing.

1896 saw a great revival. At the Shearer Schoolhouse in eastern North Carolina, over one hundred were baptized by the Holy Spirit and fire and spoke in other languages through the Spirit’s leading.

After the period of the dark ages, the Church rose once again. The historic gathering happened in June 13, 1903 in Cherokee County, North Carolina. During this gathering, a man named A. J. Tomlinson proclaimed that after going to the top of a mountain for an extended prayer that He believes, accepts and obeys the Bible, the word of God and that He is to walk in the light of God.

Unfortunately, the Church was disrupted in 1923 that caused it to split. The split resulted of having two groups both calling themselves The Church of God. Ten years later, in 1933, God gave his Church a banner or flag. This Church composed of people who feared God too much to be led astray from the truth. In 1952, the Church of God became The Church of God of Prophecy.

The Church of God of Prophecy left the theocratic government in 1990. A Solemn Assembly was held on July 23-25, 1993. On July 24, the Holy Spirit gave instructions to renounce or abandon all political and religious belief and continue as The Church of God. Robert J. Pruitt was assigned to be the General Overseer and The Church of God returned to theocracy.

The reorganization of The Church of God brought forth the true theocracy of God and the exclusive Body of Christ, which was set in order by Christ and operated in theocratic order until A.D. 325; which has risen from the dark ages on June 13, 1903, and which continued after the 1923 disruption.

Since the Church’s establishment in A.D. 28, there had been many victories, revivals, healings and deliverance. To this date, The Church of God is operating in forty-seven countries with more churches opening every year.
