Facility History

A member of the Cleveland Church donated a five-acre land to the Church of God. This site became the general headquarters office complex and sanctuary of the Church of God. The Church of God Facility history dates back to December 12, 1993 when ninety-three people gathered on the donated land in Zion Hill, Cleveland, TN. The attendance on that historic Sunday includes five State Overseers from Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and West Virginia. It was indeed a beautiful day and the people who were gathered believed that the Spirit of the Lord was in their midst.

The construction of the sanctuary and general headquarters office complex began soon after. As for funding, the people began giving freely for the construction of the complex. Every member wanted to be a part of God’s program by donating to the Church. And with the generous donations gathered, the Church of God Facility, mainly the headquarters, was completed and ready to serve the needs of God’s people.

The newly constructed Church of God facility was dedicated on September 1, 1994 before the General Assembly. The Church of God staff started moving to the new headquarters on October 3, 1994, less than a year from the time ninety-three people gathered on the site.

Three years later, on the 2nd General Assembly held in 1997, the Ways and Means Committee recommended purchasing an additional two and a half acres of land directly behind the Church of God facility. According to the General Trustees and Ways and Means committee, the purposes of purchasing the said additional land were:

  • To provide land for the future expansion of the Church of God facility;
  • To ensure that the Church of God facility will not be surrounded by housing or any other development and
  • To keep people from using the Church of God facility to access other properties.

The committee was given an approval by the General Assembly to purchase the additional land.

In 1998, a year after purchasing the additional land, the Ways and Means committee submitted another proposal to purchase additional land. This was during the 93rd General Assembly. The Ways and Means committee stated that with the growth the Church of God is experiencing a need to expand the facility is forthcoming. The committee recommended that the present facility complex to accommodate print shop, merchandising area, shipping and mailing capabilities. Again, the General Assembly gave the committee approval to purchase additional five acres of property.

At the 94th General Assembly, the Ways and Means committee suggested that permission be granted to Robert J. Pruitt, the General Overseer and the Administrative Committee to proceed with the plans of constructing the Church of God expansion facility. Once again, the General Assembly didn’t let the Ways and Committee down by giving their consent on the implementation of the project.

Construction began in early 2000. The expansion project started with the print shop facilities and included adding a second floor to house the printing and space for the publication materials. The expansion also opened additional office spaces.

The second phase of the expansion began soon after. Funds were raised in order to continue with the projects. With the raised fund, construction of the second building began but the General Overseer recommended that the construction should not exceed the fund that were raised and in no way should the Church of God incur loans or debts during the process.

It was in May 28, 2009 when the second phase of the project was concluded. The General Overseer at that time was Stephen E. Smith. The new Church of God facilities were dedicated during the Sunday service on September 13, 2009. It was also the 104th General Assembly.
